With the 21st century technology expansion creating products and tools that are making our lives easier, it is also creating unique problems that prior generations haven’t had to deal with. Many children today are not accustomed to having to wait for anything. They have grown up with instant gratification as the norm. But this is a double-edged sword. Kids nowadays suffer more from depression, anxiety, bipolar, anger, etc, than ever before. Psychologists believe overstimulation of the senses, along with a refined diet of sugar and flour, is to blame. In providing what we believe is a better life for our kids might actually be the thing that is hurting them most.
It’s important for parents to understand that this is a normal lifestyle for children, and it’s not something they should be grateful for just because past generations had harder lives. The guilt trip won’t work here. But what will work are kindness and understanding of what our children are going through. If a child truly believes we understand and are hearing their fears and concerns, they will respond better. Without this kind of empathetic understanding, getting a child into a treatment program may require a forceful transportation.
