Can Pornography Impose Limits on the Emotional Range of Teens?

Pornography is a complicated issue in the lives of troubled teens. Studies have shown that those who view pornography regularly exhibit a limited emotional rangeAddiction is negative no matter what the addiction is, and those who deal with porn addictions tend to have problems with feeling completely numb to emotional response. If you are a parent with a troubled teen dealing with porn addictions, consider a program like Mt. Pleasant Academy. For more information about Mt. Pleasant Academy and the help that we offer, please call one of our Family Advocates today at 866-439-8110.

Pornography Addiction and How It Can Affect Troubled Teens

Many parents may struggle greatly with sexual problems in their student. It can be shocking to discover these problems, but they are issues that need treatment just like any other problem. Constant viewing of pornography can have an effect on teenagers and their view of sexuality. A study by UCLA’s SPAN Lab measured the emotional reaction of so called “hypersexuals”. The study expected to find heightened emotional response while those being tested viewed a three minute pornographic film. They in fact found that the opposite is true. Emotional numbness seems to be the reaction in those who view pornography regularly.

Even though these issues are sensitive and complicated, troubled teens with porn addiction problems need the help and support of their families. Some people view pornography as completely harmless, but teenagers tend to have major issues with emotional immaturity during adolescence. Compulsive consumption of pornography can skew the views that teenagers take on sexuality and healthy sexual conduct. Paying attention to your student’s activity on the Internet and their emotional state can help them in the long run.
