Young Adult Programs – Transition Programs for Young Adults

Young Adult Programs are designed for troubled teens that don’t grow up and they become young adults.  Essentially, the are 18 to 25 year olds who were troubled teens and slipped into adulthood without getting the help they needed.  At one point or another, the young adults gets into so much trouble they cry out to their parents and beg for help.  Most of the time the young adult is an addict, addicted to drugs and/or alcohol.  Substance abuse and chemical dependency is the two biggest issues facing the young adult in need of residential inpatient help.  Most of the time the help comes in the form of substance abuse counseling, which is either delivered through inpatient treatment of intensive outpatient treatment. The young adult who calls out to his/her parents for help do not have many options that are specifically designed for the young adult (adult male or female who is essentially on the emotional level of a young teenager).  Emotional immaturity, coupled with drug and alcohol dependency, is a one-two knock out punch.  It is difficult to offer the specific treatment that works with immature young adults.  The young adult must be highly motivated and “at the end of themselves”.  They have to completely surrender to the treatment process, follow treatment parameters, and abide by the rules.  To the immature young adult surrender is one of the most difficult decisions, especially when surrender looks like giving up adulthood and autonomy.  The truth is that no matter how old a person is, emotionally immaturity and treatment don’t gp hand-in-hand.  When the going gets tough most immature young adults leave the program.  When young adults with drug and alcohol problems are asked to hold themselve and others accountable to sobriety, they often quit.
