There are hundreds, if not thousands, of troubled teen programs. But beware!  Many marketing schemes are all over the Internet just waiting to take advantage of vulnerable parents.  These Internet marketing schemes are easy to spot.  They are the generic web sites that promise to help the parent find the right school (they all state “Family First” or “Troubled Teen” in one form or another) but they never give any information.  Their goal is to gather your personal information and the sell it to a call center staffed with professional telemarketers.  These professional sales people use fear and other high-pressure techniques to get you to send your child to one of their schools.  They pretend to be a service of created for teen help, meaning they pretend to be an independent organization whose purpose is to help parents but in reality are a marketing arm of a conglomeration of schools that pretend to be independently owned. These sales people earn a commission.  They are professionally trained as telemarketers but know nothing about serving troubled teens and certainly nothing about the schools they refer to.  Most of these sales people have never stepped foot on any of the campuses they represent.   Additionally, other Internet-based marketing schemes prey on unsuspecting and vulnerable parents by claiming to be educational consultants or parent advocates when in reality they only refer schools that pay a large kickback.  In these cases the Internet-based marketing scheme dupes you into believing that they are independent consultants who will help the parent find the right fit (perfect school) for their child but in reality they only refer the parent to the schools that are willing to pay the highest kickback.  These placing agents really work for the schools but pretend to be independent advocates for the parent.  They are only advocates of their wallet.  These are just a few of the schemes that are being pulled out there.   Please understand there are many wonderful Internet-based programs out there that are truly advocates of the parents and operate with the utmost integrity.  Parents can easily tell the difference between the Internet-based services that use professionalism and integrity and those that use schemes and fronts.  When a web site proclaims everything about the owner or management of the sites then you can pretty much tell that they operate with the utmost professionalism and honesty.  When the site allows you direct access to all their personal information, including their name, address, bio, and picture, then you can trust that they don’t use marketing schemes and telemarketers.  If they give you direct access to a listing of schools, including the schools information and web site, then you can trust them.  If they are a generic site with no personal information and no listing of schools, then beware.  If all they want to do is to peak your interest and get you to fill out a form then steer away!  Please enjoy the following teaching by Sandy Brunson
