In today’s society, it is become increasingly common to find high levels of cynicism among younger and younger people. It is understandable how this development takes place — the increasing influence of an exasperating news media, the rise of acerbic and sarcastic humor stomping upon anything remotely sentimental, the fact that by the age of 10 our kids feel like they’ve seen it all — but it should be combated by parents for the sake of their children’s happiness. Please don’t allow your teen to remain stuck in the horrible state of mind that cynicism brings about when professional assistance could make a difference.

From the time he became a teenager, my son began to develop a world view that was incredibly cynical. It started off slow and didn’t seem like anything to worry about at first, but as he got older this only became more pronounced. He seem to be skeptical about everything and was hesitant to trust anyone and embrace life to even the smallest degree. Needless to say, this was concerning for our family. He seemingly gone from a happy go lucky child to a jaded adult overnight. Unfortunately, because this seemed like somewhat stereotypical behavior for a teen we failed to seek out help.
It was only after several years of this type of behavior that we became convinced that this wasn’t normal and professional help might be necessary. At this point we decided to seek out guidance from a Christian program as spiritual development seemed like the best way to bring about a lasting change to the way he approached life. We were lucky enough to find a treatment facility that brought about this change in him by bringing him into a closer relationship with Christ. Since this time, I have sought to educate other parents whenever possible about the positive impact developing a religious foundation can have on any teen’s development. Please don’t choose a form of assistance that fails to include this important element of the recovery process.
