Teaching Teens Self-Control through Marshmallows
In a study that measured teens ability to resist immediate gratification, W. Mischel and his colleagues found a way to observe how well kids were able to resist eating treats in order to attain great rewards by delaying gratification. They brought young boys and girls in one at a time and presented them with treats that they loved. The students were told they could eat the treat whenever they wanted to, but if they held off until the monitor returned they could get a second treat. See the results in my next installment of Teaching Teens Self Control.
Teaching Teens Self Control Second Part
Some kids ate their treat right away; others tried to resist but could only hold out for a short while. The only kids that were able to succeed in waiting were able to do this by distracting themselves.
Long after the study was published it was discovered that those kids who managed to withhold immediate gratification did much better in school, scored higher on their SATs and went on to more successful careers than those who were unable to resist the temptation of immediate gratification.
